Nikon Z6 III Review

Nikon Z6 III represents a major evolution in Nikon’s full-frame mirrorless lineupBuilding on the success of the Z6 II, the Z6 III introduces a new 24 MP partially-stacked sensor alongside the same EXPEED 7 processor found in Nikon’s flagship cameras, resulting in significant gains in autofocus speed, high-speed shooting performance and high-quality video recording.

It is the most advanced 24 MP camera Nikon has ever produced and currently represents amazing value.

Nikon Z System

The Z6 III continues Nikon’s commitment to the Z-mount system, which debuted in 2018 with the original Z6 and Z7. With a larger mount diameter and shorter flange distance, the Z system allowed Nikon to design faster, sharper lenses with better low-light performance. Compared to old DSLRs the system is smaller and lighter while also improving autofocus speed and overall image quality. After nearly a decade, the Z-mount system now provides a wide selection of lenses. Nikon F-mount lenses (older DSLR lenses) remain fully compatible with Nikon Z cameras via the FTZ adapter.

General

Nikon Z6 III features a 24.5 MP partially stacked BSI sensor paired with the EXPEED 7 processor, delivering major improvements in speed, autofocus and video performance. Compared to the Z6 II, sensor readout is significantly faster, enabling better AF, better high-speed shooting performance and minimal rolling shutter distortion.

The camera retains Nikon’s durable magnesium alloy body with full weather sealing and introduces a slightly more ergonomic grip compared to previous models. While similar in size to the Z6 II, the Z6 III feels more balanced and comfortable during extended shooting sessions.

The Z6 III features a fully articulating LCD screen and Nikon’s brightest EVF to date.

In-body 5-axis image stabilization provides up to approximately 8 stops of shake reduction in testing. There are two stabilization modes available in the settings menu, with “Sport” mode producing more stable results.

Professional-level flexibility is supported with dual card slots (one SD and one CFexpress or XQD). The Z6 III is also the first camera in the Z6 line to include a full-size HDMI port.

Autofocus

Autofocus on the Z6 III represents a major step forward compared to older Z-series models. Thanks to deep-learning-based subject detection and improved phase-detect algorithms, the camera can reliably track human and animal subjects and maintain focus even in extremely low-light conditions.

The Z6 III features 273 focus points for single-point AF and 299 focus points for auto-area AF. 3D tracking and wide-area AF modes give users flexibility when shooting unpredictable subjects like for example wildlife or sports.

Autofocus performance is also consistent when using either the mechanical or electronic shutter and performs well for both photo and video work.

In real-world use, autofocus performance varies depending on the lens and settings, but all reviewers note a huge improvement over the Z6 II.

Photography

Image quality is great, with great dynamic range, natural color rendering and very clean high-ISO performance.

Shutter options include mechanical, electronic front-curtain (EFCS) and fully electronic (silent) modes. Dynamic rage remains consistent across all shutter types (some cameras have a noticeable drop in the dynamic range when switching to the electronic shutter, but reportedly not the Z6 III).

The Z6 III can shoot up to 14 fps in RAW with full autofocus when using the mechanical shutter. 

Continuous shooting performance with the electronic shutter is dramatically enhanced thanks to faster sensor readout and improved processing pipeline. In electronic shutter mode, the Z6 III can shoot at up to 20 fps in 14-bit RAW, up to 60 fps in JPEG or up to 120 fps at a reduced 11 MP resolution (1.5x crop).

Buffer limitations are effectively a non-issue, with capacities ranging from roughly 300 frames to well over 1,000 frames depending on the shooting mode.

Pre-Capture mode (Pre-Shoot Burst Mode) can record approximately one second of images before the shutter is fully pressed at up to 120 fps, but this feature is limited to JPEGs.

Nikon Z6 III also includes a sensor-shift mechanism that enables pixel-shift shooting, combining multiple exposures with slight sensor movements to produce high-resolution images of up to 96 MP.

Partially stacked sensors are known to deliver slightly reduced dynamic range compared to a traditional BSI sensor with the same pixel size. Compared to the Z6 II’s 24 MP BSI sensor, the Z6 III’s 24 MP partially stacked sensor sacrifices about one stop of dynamic range, but this applies only to low ISO values, up to roughly ISO 800. This reduction may become noticeable in rare high-contrast scenes, particularly when highlights are blown.

Video

Video is one of the standout strengths of the Z6 III, thanks the new partially-stacked sensor and the fast EXPEED 7 processor.

The Z6 III can record 6K at 60 fps internally, but this mode is limited to N-RAWN-RAW is Nikon’s extremely high-quality codec, preserving maximum detail, dynamic range and color information. In the past, N-RAW footage could only be edited in DaVinci Resolve. While support has since expanded to some other video editors, compatibility is still not universal, so it’s important to confirm that N-RAW fits into your editing workflow.

At 6K 30 fps, and all other recording modes, this limitation is removed, allowing also the use of ProRes RAW, which delivers image quality nearly as high as N-RAW.

In terms of 4K video, the Z6 III can record oversampled 4K at up to 60 fps without a crop, resulting in excellent image quality. It can also record 4K at 100 fps and 120 fps, but these modes apply a 1.5x crop and are not oversampled, leading to reduced sharpness.

For extreme slow motion, the camera offers Full HD (1080p) recording at up to 240 fps.

The Z6 III finally removes the strict 30-minute recording limit that plagued its predecessors, extending the maximum clip length to 125 minutes. That said, the presence of any recording limit on a camera of this class still feels outdated.

The camera only records video to a single card, which reduces redundancy and is a downside for professional work where backup recording is critical. This limitation applies to all Nikon cameras.

Heat Management

Heat management has improved compared to older Nikon models, allowing for longer recording times overall. However, when using the most demanding internal mode – 6K 60 fps uncompressed N-RAW – the camera will shut down after roughly 20 minutes due to overheating of either the camera body or the memory card (although in practice a 256 GB card would fill up just as quickly at this setting anyway).

Other demanding modes, such as 6K 30 fps RAW, 4K 120 fps and 4K 60 fps at H.265, in testing allow for recording times of around one hour before thermal shutdown. These recording times can decrease if the camera is used in a hot environment or in direct sunlight. Less demanding modes do not appear to have meaningful recording limits.

Lower-Quality Recording Options for Social Media and Smaller File Sizes

Using high-quality codecs results in extremely large file sizes which should be factored into storage and workflow considerations.

For users that want to avoid massive file sizes – or don’t require high-quality RAW video – the Z6 III offers several alternative recording options. The 10-bit ProRes 422 HQ codec still produces detailed and good-looking footage and supports 5K 30 fps, cropped 4K 60 fps, Full HD 120 fps and Full HD 60 fps.

For creators, vloggers and those producing content for social media or YouTube, Nikon’s 10-bit H.265 recording options may be the most practical choice. These include 5K up to 60 fps without a crop, 4K 120 fps and 4K 60 fps with a crop and Full HD 240 fps with a slight crop. However, for footage intended for large displays or heavy post-production, H.265 is not recommended due to aggressive noise reduction that noticeably reduces overall image quality.

Nikon Z5 II

Nikon Z8

Nikon Z6 (2018), Z6 II (2020) and Z5 II (2025) all use the same 24.5 MP BSI sensor. Nikon Z5 II is the most recent model and the only one that uses a faster EXPEED 7 processor.

Nikon Z5 II (2025) features a 24 MP BSI sensor paired with the EXPEED 7 processor (the same processor used in the the Z6 III, Z8 and Z9) resulting in much better autofocus performance compared to Z6 or Z6 II. It can shoot at up to 11 fps in RAW with the mechanical shutter (14 fps JPEG), up to 14 fps RAW with the electronic shutter (30 fps JPEG) and it can record 4K video at 30 fps oversampled from 6K (internally in 12-bit RAW) and 4K at up to 60 fps with a 1.5x crop.

Compared to the Z6 III, it has weaker autofocus, lacks the newer partially stacked sensor, does not offer advanced video recording modes like 6K RAW and falls short of the overall speed and performance improvements found in the Z6 III.

Nikon Z7 II (2020) is Nikon’s high-resolution full-frame option. It offers a 45 MP BSI sensor with excellent stills capability in case you are looking for higher resolution while staying in the Nikon ecosystem. It’s much less focused on videography or speed than the Z6 III, but the extra resolution is ideal for landscape, studio and any type of detailed photography. It costs slightly less than the Z6 III.

Nikon Z8 (2023) sits much higher in Nikon’s lineup and is effectively the flagship Z9 in a smaller body. It uses a 45 MP stacked sensor paired with Nikon’s EXPEED 7 processor, delivering class-leading autofocus performance with advanced subject detection, blackout-free 20 fps shooting and extremely fast sensor readout, effectively eliminating the need for a mechanical shutter. It can record 8K 60 fps in 12-bit N-RAW, 4K up to 120 fps and oversampled 4K 60 fps. It can shoot at up to 20 fps in RAW, 30 fps in full-resolution JPEG and up to 120 fps in 11 MP JPEG. Buffer performance is extremely strong and the Z8 can shoot 20 fps for approximately 1,000 frames (50 seconds) without viewfinder blackout.

The Z8 is aimed squarely at professionals who need maximum performance for sports, wildlife, event or high-end video work.

It is significantly more expensive than the Z6 III and offers far more capability than most photographers and videographers will ever need. For users who do not require 45 MP or 8K video recording, the Z6 III delivers a much better balance of performance and price while still offering great autofocus, great image quality and excellent video features.

Sony A7 V

Sony A7 III

Sony A7 III (2018) is Sony’s entry-level full-frame camera. It’s a competitor to the older Z6 II offering a similar 24 MP BSI sensor, IBIS, dual card slots, weather sealing and 10 fps shooting. The Z6 II and the Z5 II exceed it in build quality and color science while the A7 III is typically cheaper when purchased used, since it’s more popular and has been around for longer.

Sony A7 IV (2021) marked a major step forward in Sony’s full-frame lineup. It features a newer 33 MP BSI sensor and advanced autofocus along with strong video capabilities including 4K at 60 fps recording (with very noticeable rolling shutter distortion). In terms of image quality, it produces excellent stills with excellent dynamic range. However, the continuous shooting is limited to just 6 fps RAW or 10 fps compressed RAW (versus 14 or 20 fps RAW on the Z6 III) and when using the electronic shutter, rolling shutter distortion is extremely visible due to the high-resolution sensor with slower readout speed.

Additionally the price is also higher than the Z6 III.

Sony A7 V (2025) replaces the classic 33 MP BSI sensor with a faster partially-stacked 33 MP BSI sensor with faster readout resulting in even better autofocus performance, much less rolling shutter distortion and better high-speed shooting performance (up to 20 fps with the electronic shutter and up to 30 fps with Sony-branded lenses). It also introduces a new BIONZ XR2 processor with a built-in AI processing unit and a new hybrid screen design (tilting and fully articulating). Video recording is limited to 4K and to 10-bit (there is no internal or external 12-bit RAW recording option).

Sony A7 V currently represents great value, especially compared to the Sony A7 IV, but it’s significantly more expensive than the Nikon Z6 III. Pricing in this segment fluctuates over time, but it currently costs about $800 more than the Z6 III.

Canon EOS R8 (2023) is Canon’s modern entry-level full-frame model and a major upgrade over the older EOS R and EOS RP. It is essentially a more compact and more affordable version of the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, sharing the same 24 MP sensor and highly advanced autofocus system. Autofocus performance is consistently stronger than that of most current Nikon cameras. The R8 offers oversampled 4K 60 fps 10-bit recording without a crop (although rolling shutter distortion is noticeable). It lacks IBIS, has no mechanical shutter and has only one card slot. It can shoot at up to 40 fps in 12-bit RAW with the electronic shutter (with noticeable rolling shutter distortion).

The R8 is an extremely capable camera, but for photographers, similarly priced entry-level alternatives such as the Nikon Z5 II and Sony A7 III may offer a more well-rounded feature set.

Canon EOS R6 Mark II (2022) was a significant upgrade to its outdated predecessor, the original R6. It brings a newer 24 MP sensor with better detail, less rolling shutter distortion and improved dynamic range. It offers amazing autofocus, continuous shooting at up to 40 fps with the electronic shutter (12 fps mechanical), oversampled 4K 60 fps recording and even 6K RAW external recording. Internal recording is limited to 10-bit with an option of external 12-bit recording.

The R6 II is slightly more expensive than the Nikon Z6 III, but pricing in this segment can fluctuate over time.

Canon EOS R6 Mark III (2025) is not necessarily a direct successor to the R6 Mark II, instead, it can be seen as an alternative version built around a higher-resolution 32 MP sensor. It retains the speed (up to 40 fps high-speed shooting), extremely reliable autofocus performance and compact design that made the R6 Mark II so popular, while introducing far more high-quality video features like 7K RAW, 4K 120 fps and Open Gate recording.

The R6 III is much more expensive than the Nikon Z6 III (the price is similar to the likes of the new Sony A7 V).

Final Verdict

Nikon Z6 III is Nikon’s most advanced 24 MP mirrorless camera to date and represents a major leap forward for the Z6 line. With its partially stacked sensor, EXPEED 7 processor, class-leading autofocus, extremely fast burst shooting and significantly expanded video capabilities, it delivers performance that was previously reserved for Nikon’s flagship models. In terms of speed, responsiveness and overall versatility, the Z6 III is in a completely different class than the Z6 and Z6 II.

For photographers, the Z6 III offers excellent image quality, good subject tracking and very fast readout, making it well suited for everything from portraits and landscapes to action, wildlife and event photography. The improved EVF, stronger IBIS and faster operation all contribute to a much more refined shooting experience.

Videographers will find the Z6 III to be one of Nikon’s strongest hybrid cameras yet. High-quality 4K and 6K recording options and internal 12-bit RAW recording make it a serious video camera, even without external recorders. While it still doesn’t replace dedicated cinema cameras, it removes many of the practical limitations found in earlier Z models.

On the other hand, for many photographers and hobbyist, the Z5 II is likely the best more affordable entry point into Nikon’s full-frame Z system.

The Z6 III is also quite unique and doesn’t have many direct competitors from other brands. The closest competitors are the Sony A7 V (which has better AF performance, but offers much less video recording options compared to the Z6 III) and Canon R6 II and R6 III (both offer better AF performance than the Z6 III, but Nikon still has them beat in the video department thanks to its internal 6K 60 fps 12-bit N-RAW recording). All 3 models are also much more expensive than the Z6 III, especially the Sony A7 V and the Canon R6 Mark III (about $800 more).
