Sony A7 V Review

Sony A7 V is a massive upgrade over the A7 IV. It replaces the classic 33 MP BSI sensor with a faster partially-stacked 33 MP sensor with faster readout resulting in even better autofocus performance, much less rolling shutter distortion and better high-speed shooting performance (up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter). It also introduces a new hybrid screen design and a new BIONZ XR2 processor with a built-in AI processing unit for enhanced processing when it comes to AI driven tasks.

SONY E-Mount

Sony introduced the E-mount in 2010 alongside their first mirrorless cameras, giving them a huge head start. Over a decade later, there are over 100 native lenses and more than 200 if you include third-party options. Because the mount hasn’t changed, old lenses still work with newer cameras, creating a huge second-hand market. Compare that to Canon and Nikon, which only introduced new mounts in 2018, Sony users have had years to build and upgrade their kits without starting from scratch. For beginners entering the Sony system that means more options and much better prices.

General

Sony A7 V uses a new 33 MP partially stacked sensor (the A7 IV had a traditional 33 MP BSI sensor with slower readout speed). It’s paired with a new BIONZ XR2 processor. This is a new processor that combines 2 Sony’s BIONZ XR processors and Sony’s AI processing unit.

The weather sealed body design is essentially the same as that of the A7 IV with one major improvement – a new higher-resolution LCD screen that is both tilting and fully articulating. There is also a new ‘Vertical Display’ option that, when enabled, rotates all the settings on the screen for easy switching between vertical and horizontal shooting.

In-body 5-axis image stabilization provides up to approximately 7.5 stops of shake reduction. This might seem like a small 2-stop jump from the A7 IV, but performance in both photo and video mode is dramatically improved.

Just like the A7 IV, this camera also features the same EVF, a full size HDMI port and a mixed dual card slot setup (one SD and one CFexpress Type A or SD). There are 2 USB-C ports this time with the top one meant for high-speed data transfer and the bottom one mainly for charging.

Battery life is about 23% better than on the A7 IV thanks to the new processor design.

Autofocus

Sony’s autofocus is widely regarded as one of the best in the industry. The A7 IV was already extremely capable, but this camera takes it even further. The A7 V uses a new version of Sony’s ‘Fast Hybrid AF’ system with a new AI-based deep-learning engine for enhanced subject recognition and tracking. A similar AF system was already used in Sony’s flagship A1 II.

AF area covers roughly 94% of the image area for both stills and movies with 759 phase-detection AF points.

The camera can recognize and track 7 different subject types: humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and airplanes. You can manually select the type of subject you want to photograph or leave the camera in Auto Mode since it’s also very capable of detecting different kinds of subjects without your help.

Eye-Detection is available for humans, birds and certain animals and AI is used to detect and track the eyes and face of the subject with extremely high precision. The camera also maintains focus well in low-light conditions and even when the face is upside down. You can even manually select the preferred right or left eye, switch focus points using the joystick or allow the camera to choose automatically.

Photography

Image quality is excellent, with strong dynamic range and natural color rendering. The sensor is backside-illuminated which leads to very clean high-ISO performance, making it well-suited for low-light photography. 

Older Sony cameras were know to have issues with color accuracy, but this was already resolved with the A7 IV and the A7 V now uses AI-based white balance control for more accurate color reproduction.

Shutter options include mechanical, electronic front-curtain and fully electronic (silent) shutter modes.

Sony A7 V can shoot at up to 10 fps in 14-bit RAW with the mechanical shutter. In this mode the buffer is essentially unlimited (1000+ frames) if you are saving files to the faster CFexpress card.

In electronic shutter mode the camera can shoot at up to 30 fps in 14 bit RAW. If you use lossless compressed RAW the buffer allows about 40 frames. If you use a lower-quality compressed RAW option (also referred to as lossy compressed) then the buffer allows for around 100 frames. If you don’t mind shooting JPEGs, you can shoot for around 200 frames.

The 30 fps mode is available only if you use Sony branded lenses. If you use third party lenses, then the maximum shooting speed drops to 20 fps. In this mode the buffer allows for around 50 lossless compressed or almost 200 compressed shots.

Keep in mind that, if you use an SD card instead of the CFexpress card (or if you save files to both cards simultaneously) this can negatively impact the buffer and especially clearing times.

When photographing fast-moving subjects with the electronic shutter, rolling shutter distortion is still somewhat visible due to the high-resolution sensor, but this is much less of an issue than with the A7 IV thanks to faster readout speed. There is also a small drop in dynamic range when shooting with the electronic shutter and a bit more noise at higher ISO values.

Pre-Capture mode can record up to one second of images before the shutter is fully pressed at up to 30 fps.

Video

Sony A7 V can record oversampled 4K video at up to 60 fps without a crop. The footage is oversampled from 7K, delivering excellent detail, strong dynamic range and natural colors.

4K 60 fps mode comes with a 1.15x crop. You will need to turn on a new setting called ‘4K angle of view Priority’ to use the full-width of the sensor for 4K 60 fps recording, but this automatically reduces noise reduction used at high-ISO values.

Rolling shutter is still noticeable, but much less than on the A7 IV all thanks to the new processor and the new partially stacked sensor with faster readout speed (2-3 times faster readout than the A7 IV according to Sony).

4K 120 fps video recording is available, but it comes with a 1.5x crop and the footage is less detailed since this mode is not oversampled (according to some reviewers this mode is also oversampled, but just from 4.6K).

Full HD (1080p) recording is available at up to 240 fps.

Recording is limited to 10-bit. You can record in Sony’s S-Log 2, S-Log 3 and S-Cinetone for greater flexibility in grading and post-processing. There is still no option for 12-bit RAW recording (not internally nor externally).

The camera has built-in stabilization (IBIS) to help with handheld recording with Active Mode providing much more stable footage than Standard, but it comes with a crop and therefore reduced image quality. There is also an additional Dynamic Active Stabilization mode, but it comes with an even greater crop.

Individual clips are limited to 13 hours for most modes and 6.5 hours for some high-framerate modes. The battery allows for more than 2 hours of 4K 60 fps recording and USB-C power delivery can be used to extend this time.

Streaming via USB-C is available in 720p at 30 fps, in 1080p at 30 or 60 fps and in 4K at 30 fps. 

Just like with other A7 series cameras, overheating is not an issue and the camera usually runs out of battery before overheating, even when recording in 4K at 60 fps. According to Sony the camera has a heat dissipating design with effective heat distribution. It is still advisable to keep the screen flipped out and keep the camera out of direct sunlight.

Sony A7 V Alternatives

SONY A7 IV

Sony A7 IV (2021) features a traditional 33 MP BSI sensor rather than the faster partially stacked sensor found in the newer Sony A7 V. It remains a highly capable hybrid camera and its autofocus system is still considered very advanced by modern standards. However, the camera does have several limitations. Continuous shooting is limited to 6 fps in uncompressed RAW or 10 fps in compressed RAW and while video features include 10-bit 4K 60 fps recording, rolling shutter distortion can be quite noticeable due to the high-resolution sensor’s relatively slow readout speed. Dynamic range, however, remains excellent.

The A7 IV is still a solid overall camera, but the A7 V improves upon it in nearly every area. Considering the relatively small price difference between the two models, the A7 V is generally the more compelling option.

Canon R6 III

Canon EOS R6 Mark III, EOS R6 V and Canon C50 all use the same 32.5 MP sensor. The R6 III is an extremely capable hybrid camera, while the C50 and R6 V have a video-centric design.

Canon EOS R6 Mark III (2025) is Canon’s most advanced camera in the R6 series and a direct competitor to the Sony A7 V. It offers continuous shooting up to 40 fps with the electronic shutter (12 fps mechanical) and extremely reliable autofocus performance. It can record in 7K at 60 fps, 4K at 120 fps and oversampled 4K at 60 fps (all internally in 12-bit RAW). It also offers Open Gate recording in up to 7K 30 fps.

Sony A7 V and the Canon R6 Mark III have the same price.

Nikon Z6 III

Nikon has no direct competitor to the Sony A7 IV in terms of megapixels.

Nikon Z6 III (2024) is Nikon’s most advanced 24 MP camera, featuring a partially-stacked 24 MP BSI sensor, an EXPEED 7 processor and class-leading autofocus and video capabilities including internal 6K 60 fps 12-bit N-RAW recording, oversampled 4K 60 fps recording and 4K 120 fps recording with a 1.5x crop. It can shoot at 14 fps in RAW with a mechanical shutter and 20 fps in RAW with the electronic shutter (60 fps in full-res JPEG and 120 fps in 11 MP JPEG).

The Z6 III currently costs much less than the Sony A7 V and even less than the Sony A7 IV. It does have a lower-resolution sensor and autofocus might not be quite as advanced as on Sony cameras, but it offers much more video recording features and great high-speed continuous shooting performance along with a fast partially-stacked BSI sensor with fast readout.

Final Verdict

Sony A7 V is an extremely capable mirrorless camera and a major upgrade over the Sony A7 IV. It is currently only slightly more expensive, making it the clearly better option between the two for most users. That said, the price of the A7 IV tends to fluctuate more over time than the prices of some other Sony cameras, which could occasionally make it a more attractive value option.

There are still several strong alternatives from other brands that offer different feature sets, so if you are not yet committed to a particular camera system, it is worth researching which model best fits your workflow and shooting style. Cameras such as the Canon EOS R6 Mark III and Nikon Z6 III may offer more features, but the better choice ultimately depends on each user’s specific needs.
