Sony A1 II Review

Sony A1 II is Sony’s new flagship camera and the direct successor to the original A1. While it retains the same 50 MP stacked sensor, it introduces a new AI processing unit for improved subject recognition and tracking.

Among other upgrades, the A1 II also upgrades to a new rugged and more ergonomic body and it introduces a new extremely practical hybrid LCD screen that is both tilting and fully articulating.

SONY E-Mount

Sony introduced the E-mount in 2010 alongside their first mirrorless cameras, giving them a huge head start. Over a decade later, there are over 100 native lenses and more than 200 if you include third-party options. Because the mount hasn’t changed, old lenses still work with newer cameras, creating a huge second-hand market. Compare that to Canon and Nikon, which only introduced new mounts in 2018, Sony users have had years to build and upgrade their kits without starting from scratch. For beginners entering the Sony system that means more options and much better prices.

General

Sony A1 II uses the same 50 MP stacked BSI sensor as the original A1. It’s paired with 2 BIONZ XR processors and an additional AI processing unit for enhanced processing when it comes to AI-driven tasks.

In-body 5-axis image stabilization now provides up to approximately 8.5 stops of shake reduction at the center and up to 7 steps at the periphery of the frame.

The body is the same as the one used for the new Sony A9 III. It’s very well weather sealed. The design is still similar to the original A1 with a few repositioned buttons and a new separate selector lever to switch between photo and video. It is one of the largest Sony bodies, but still it remains compact compared to DSLRs or camera models from other brands.

The A1 II upgraders to a new high-resolution LCD screen that is both tilting and fully articulating. Professional connectivity includes a full-size HDMI port, flash-sync, an improved faster Ethernet port and standard headphone, microphone and USB-C ports.

Just like with the original A1, the A1 II features two identical card slots that accept either CFexpress Type A or UHS-II SD cards. The EVF is also the same. It’s large and bright and you can choose refresh rates up to 240 fps. There is a small drop in the display quality when you switch between 60 fps and 120 fps, but there is very noticeable drop when you go to 240 fps.

Autofocus

Sony’s autofocus is definitely one of the best in the industry. The AF on the original A1 was already extremely reliable, but the A1 II takes it to another level.

The A1 II uses a new version of Sony’s ‘Fast Hybrid AF’ system with an AI-based deep-learning engine for enhanced subject recognition and tracking. 

The camera can recognize and track humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and airplanes. You can manually select the type of subject you want to photograph or leave the camera in Auto Mode since it’s also very capable of detecting different kinds of subjects without your help.

A dedicated AI processing unit helps to recognize people more accurately based on human pose estimation. According to Sony, recognition of animals is improved by approximately 30% and recognition of birds by 50%, with eyes of some small animals added and eyes, heads and faces of animals like dogs and cats are now also recognized.

Eye-Detection is available for humans and also birds and certain animals. According to Sony human eye recognition improved by up to 30% compared to the original A1. AI is now used to detect and track eyes and the face of the subject with extremely high precision. The camera also maintains focus well in low-light conditions and even when the face is upside down and when a person is wearing a helmet or something else that obscures the face. When the subject turns around and there is no eye to focus on, the camera immediately switches to face-detection, body detection or classic subject tracking and if the subject turns around again it switches back to eye-AF.

Photography

Photography performance is essentially the same as that of the previous model, since both cameras use the same sensor. As expected image quality is great with a lot of detail and great dynamic range. 

Files are extremely large – around 100 MB for each uncompressed RAW photo – but there is also a lossless compressed option that cuts the file size roughly in half without sacrificing image quality.

High-fps shooting specs are the same as on the A1. The A1 II can shoot uncompressed 14-bit RAW photos at up to 10 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 20 fps with the electronic shutter. You can also shoot at 30 fps with the electronic shutter, but only in 12-bit compressed RAW. 

According to official figures you will get anywhere from 84 to 250 shots before the buffer is full, depending on the shooting mode and settings. Using lossless compressed RAW and faster CFexpress cards can improve buffer performance. You can, of course, use cheaper (and slower) SD cards, but doing so will negatively affect both buffer depth and buffer clearing times.

Shutter options include mechanical, electronic front-curtain and fully electronic (silent) shutter modes. Since the sensor is fully stacked there is little to no rolling shutter distortion when you use the electronic shutter.

The A1 includes a sensor-shift mechanism that enables pixel-shift shooting, combining 4 or 16 exposures with slight sensor movements to produce high-resolution images with up to 199 MB. There is also the new NR (Noise Reduction) shooting mode that captures between 4 and 32 RAW images to create a full-resolution image with less noise. Keep in mind that these files are not processed in-camera, so you will need to create the final image later using dedicated software.

Pre-Capture mode allows the camera to record images for up to one second before the shutter is fully pressed. This feature works at up to 30 and of course only with the electronic shutter. Keep in mind that this setting can negatively impact the buffer.

Video

Sony A1 can record in 8K at up to 30 fps internally and without a crop. The footage is extremely detailed, with great dynamic range, great low light performance and accurate colors, but rolling shutter distortion is very visible.

4K recording is available at up to 60 fps without a crop and at up to 120 fps with a 1.13x crop.

Oversampled 4K recording is available at up to 60 fps in Super 35/APS-C mode (with a 1.5x crop). The footage is oversampled from approximately 5.8K delivering excellent detail, strong dynamic range and natural colors, but rolling shutter is still noticeable.

Full HD (1080p) recording is available at up to 240 fps.

Internal recording is limited to 10-bit and there is no internal RAW recording option. There is also an option for 16-bit RAW external recording via HDMI. RAW output is available while also recording 4K to internal card media.

Interestingly, if you record 8K externally while simultaneously recording 4K internally, the internally recorded 4K footage will be more detailed than standard 4K recorded directly to an internal card (without external recording enabled).

The camera features built-in stabilization (IBIS) to help with handheld recording with Active Mode providing much more stable footage than Standard, but it comes with an additional 1.1x crop and therefore reduced image quality since it uses digital stabilization on top of mechanical IBIS. There is also an additional Dynamic Active Stabilization mode, but it comes with an even greater crop.

The camera also features a new AI-based autoframing feature that uses eye detection, face detection or subject detection to track a in front of the camera. This makes it look like the camera is moving by utilizing a 1.5x crop.

Overheating in not an issue with most recording modes. The camera can record in 8K for more than 1 hour in a controlled environment and the camera cools down very fast, even if it’s turned on.

Recording limit is 13 hours for most modes and battery life allows up to around 90 minutes of recording, depending on your setting and shooting mode. Using USB-C for power delivery can extend battery life.

Sony A1

Sony A7 V

Sony A1 (2021) was Sony’s original flagship mirrorless camera. It uses the same 50 MP stacked sensor as the newer Sony A1 II and offers the same high-speed continuous shooting capabilities along with most of the same video features. Its autofocus system is not quite as advanced as the one found in the A1 II, but even so, it remains one of the best autofocus systems currently available on the market.

The original A1 is also currently around $1,000 cheaper than the A1 II, making it a potentially better value option for users who do not need the newer model’s AI-based features and updated body design.

Sony A7 V (2025) is Sony’s most advanced mid-range mirrorless camera. While it does not feature a fully stacked sensor like the A1, it uses a partially stacked 33 MP sensor with fast readout speeds, resulting in excellent autofocus performance, significantly reduced rolling shutter distortion and better high-speed shooting capabilities compared to other cameras in the A7 series. The A7 V can shoot at up to 20 fps with the electronic shutter and up to 30 fps when paired with certain Sony-branded lenses. Video recording is limited to 4K and to 10-bit, with no support for internal or external 12-bit RAW recording.

Similar to the Sony A1 II, the A7 V introduces Sony’s new BIONZ XR2 processor with a built-in AI processing unit, along with the same practical hybrid screen design (tilting and fully articulating).

Nikon Z8

Nikon Z9

Nikon Z8 (2023) uses a 45.7 MP stacked sensor paired with Nikon’s EXPEED 7 processor, delivering class-leading autofocus performance with advanced subject detection, blackout-free 20 fps shooting and extremely fast sensor readout, effectively eliminating the need for a mechanical shutter. It can record 8K at 60 fps in 12-bit N-RAW, 4K up to 120 fps and oversampled 4K 60 fps without a crop. It can shoot at up to 20 fps in RAW, 30 fps in full-resolution JPEG and up to 120 fps in 11 MP JPEG. Buffer performance is extremely strong and the Z8 can shoot 20 fps for approximately 1,000 frames (50 seconds) without viewfinder blackout.

Nikon Z8 is currently about half the price of the Sony A1 II and it represents great value.

Nikon Z9 (2021) is Nikon’s larger flagship camera with all specs nearly the same as with the Z8. The Z9 was the original flagship and the Z8 was later released as a more affordable option in smaller, lighter body that’s easier to carry and better suited to a wide range of shooting scenarios.

The Z9 is slightly more expensive than the Z8 because of its larger design, but still about $2000 cheaper than the Sony A1 II.

Canon R5 II

Canon EOS R5 Mark II (2024) is Canon’s high-resolution full-frame option. It uses a 45 MP stacked sensor (while the original R5 had a slower 45 MP non-stacked sensor). It uses Canon’s newest AF System ‘Dual Pixel Intelligent AF’ which is widely regarded as one of the strongest systems in the industry. It can shoot at 12 fps with the mechanical shutter for 10-20 seconds and at 30 fps with the electronic shutter for about 3 seconds. It also offers half of a second of Pre-Capture (15 RAW photos). It can record 8K 60 fps in 12-bit RAW and oversampled 4K at 30 fps, but overheating can be an issue so users need record shorter clips or use Canon’s battery grip with a built-in cooling fan.

Canon R5 Mark II is currently about $3000 cheaper than the Sony A1 II.

Final Verdict

Just like the original A1, the A1 II is also an extremely capable camera and one of the most popular flagship mirrorless models on the market. It delivers flagship-level performance in both high-speed shooting and autofocus tracking, with an autofocus system that is widely considered one of the best in the industry.

The original Sony A1 still offers many of the same features found in the newer Sony A1 II while currently costing around $1,000 less, making it a potentially better value option for users who do not need the newer model’s AI-based features and updated body design.

On the other hand, both the A1 and A1 II fall somewhat behind in the video department compared to high-resolution flagship models from other brands, such as the Nikon Z8 and Canon EOS R5 Mark II. The A1’s main advantage over those models for video work is its support for 16-bit external RAW recording. It’s also worth noting that both alternatives are significantly cheaper.
