Sony A1 Review

Sony A1 is Sony’s flagship camera featuring a 50 MP fully stacked sensor with extremely fast readout, industry-leading autofocus performance and excellent high-speed shooting capability. Sony does also offers other high-resolution cameras, but none of them offer fast readout speed that only a fully-stacked sensor can provide.

SONY E-Mount

Sony introduced the E-mount in 2010 alongside their first mirrorless cameras, giving them a huge head start. Over a decade later, there are over 100 native lenses and more than 200 if you include third-party options. Because the mount hasn’t changed, old lenses still work with newer cameras, creating a huge second-hand market. Compare that to Canon and Nikon, which only introduced new mounts in 2018, Sony users have had years to build and upgrade their kits without starting from scratch. For beginners entering the Sony system that means more options and much better prices.

Sony A1 uses a new 50 MP stacked BSI full-frame sensor paired with Sony’s new BIONZ XR processor.

In-body 5-axis image stabilization provides up to approximately 5.5 stops of shake reduction.

The body is weather sealed and very compact compared to flagship models from other brands, but the A1 is certainly one of the biggest Sony cameras.

The A1 also introduced the full size HDMI port that replaced the outdated micro HDMI used in older Sony cameras. The A1 has two identical card slots that accept either CFexpress Type A or UHS-II SD cards.

The EVF is large and bright, and you can choose between refresh rates up to 240 fps. There is a small drop in the EVF display quality when you switch between 60 fps and 120 fps, but there is very noticeable drop when you go to 240 fps. 

The A1 introduces revised menu structure (already used in the A7S III). There is a standard tilting LCD screen and for the first time in Sony’s full-frame lineup it is fully touch sensitive.

Battery life is great – the A1 uses the same large batteries as the modern A7 and A7R series cameras.

Autofocus

Sony’s autofocus is widely regarded as one of the best in the industry and the A1 uses a new version of Sony’s ‘Fast Hybrid AF’. The stacked sensor and BIONZ XR engine enable 120 AF calculations per second for pinpoint tracking precision even with fast moving subjects.

The A1 provides 759 selectable phase-detection AF points covering roughly 92% of the frame.

The camera can recognize and track a wide range of subjects, including people, animals and various vehicles. Eye-Detection is available for humans and even birds and certain animals. The camera maintains focus even in low-light conditions and even when the face is upside down. 

At release, the A1 had one of the best AF systems in the industry. The A1 II takes AF performance to a new level with a new AI processing unit, but A1 is still extremely reliable in virtually all situations.

Photography

Images are highly detailed and offer excellent dynamic range. Low-light performance is also impressive thanks to the BSI sensor, especially considering the camera’s 50 MP resolution and relatively small individual pixel size.

Files are extremely large – around 100 MB for each uncompressed RAW photo – but there is also a lossless compressed option that cuts the file size roughly in half without sacrificing image quality.

Sony A1 can shoot uncompressed 14-bit RAW photos at up to 10 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 20 fps with the electronic shutter. A 30 fps mode is also available, but only in compressed 12-bit RAW.

According to official figures, you can expect anywhere from 80 to 250 shots before the buffer fills up, depending on the shooting mode and settings. Using lossless compressed RAW and faster CFexpress cards can significantly improve buffer performance.

You can, of course, use cheaper (and slower) SD cards, but doing so will negatively affect both buffer depth and buffer clearing times.

Shutter options include mechanical, electronic front-curtain and fully electronic (silent) modes. Since the camera uses a stacked sensor (rather than a cheaper non-stacked BSI sensor) rolling shutter distortion is kept to a minimum when using the electronic shutter.

The A1 also includes a sensor-shift mechanism that enables pixel-shift shooting, combining 4 or 16 exposures with slight sensor movements to produce high-resolution images with up to 199 MB. It’s a useful and modern feature, but files are not processed in-camera, so you will need to create the final image later using dedicated software. Also keep in mind that the final file can be very large – up to 2 GB.

Video

Sony A1 can record in 8K at up to 30 fps internally and without a crop. The footage is extremely detailed, with great dynamic range, great low light performance and accurate colors, but rolling shutter distortion is still very visible.

4K recording is available in 60 fps without a crop and in 120 fps with a 1.13x crop.

Oversampled 4K recording is available at up to 60 fps, but only in the Super 35/APS-C mode (1.5x crop). The footage is oversampled from approximately 5.8K delivering excellent detail, strong dynamic range and natural colors, but rolling shutter is still noticeable.

Full HD (1080p) recording is available at up to 240 fps.

Internal recording is limited to 10-bit with no option for internal RAW recording. The camera does support 16-bit RAW output via HDMI to an external recorder. RAW output can also be used while simultaneously recording 4K footage internally.

Interestingly, if you record 8K externally while simultaneously recording 4K internally, the internally recorded 4K footage will be more detailed than standard 4K recorded directly to an internal card (without external recording enabled).

The camera also features built-in stabilization (IBIS) to help with handheld recording with Active Mode providing much more stable footage than Standard, but it comes with an additional 1.1x crop and therefore reduced image quality since it uses digital stabilization on top of mechanical IBIS.

Overheating in not an issue with most recording modes. The camera can record in 8K for more than 1 hour in a controlled environment and then camera cools down very fast, even if it’s turned on.

The recording limit is set to 13 hours for most modes and battery life allows up to around 90 minutes of recording, depending on your setting. Using USB-C for power delivery can extend battery life, but not indefinitely.

SONY A1 II

SONY A7 V

Sony A1 II (2024) is Sony’s new flagship camera and a direct successor to the original A1. The A1 II keeps the same 50 MP stacked sensor, but it utilizes a new AI processing unit for enhanced subject recognition and tracking. It adds a pre-capture mode, it upgrades to a more rugged and more ergonomic body and it introduces a new extremely practical higher-resolution LCD screen (tilting and fully articulating). Most other specifications remain the same as on the original A1.

Sony A7 V (2025) is Sony’s most advanced mid-range mirrorless camera. While it does not feature a fully stacked sensor like the A1, it uses a partially stacked 33 MP sensor with fast readout speeds, resulting in excellent autofocus performance, significantly reduced rolling shutter distortion and better high-speed shooting capabilities compared to other cameras in the A7 series. The A7 V can shoot at up to 20 fps with the electronic shutter and up to 30 fps when paired with certain Sony-branded lenses. Video recording is limited to 4K and to 10-bit, with no support for internal or external 12-bit RAW recording.

Nikon Z8

Nikon Z8 (2023) uses a 45.7 MP stacked sensor paired with Nikon’s EXPEED 7 processor, delivering class-leading autofocus performance with advanced subject detection, blackout-free 20 fps shooting and extremely fast sensor readout, effectively eliminating the need for a mechanical shutter. It can record 8K at 60 fps in 12-bit N-RAW, 4K up to 120 fps and oversampled 4K 60 fps without a crop. It can shoot at up to 20 fps in RAW, 30 fps in full-resolution JPEG and up to 120 fps in 11 MP JPEG. Buffer performance is extremely strong and the Z8 can shoot 20 fps for approximately 1,000 frames (50 seconds) without viewfinder blackout.

Nikon Z9 (2021) is Nikon’s larger flagship camera with all specs nearly the same as with the Z8. The Z9 was the original flagship and the Z8 was later released as a more affordable option in smaller, lighter body that’s easier to carry and better suited to a wide range of shooting scenarios.

Nikon Z8 is currently about $2500 cheaper than the Sony A1, but pricing in this segment fluctuates over time. The Z9 is more expensive because of its larger design, but still about $1000 cheaper than the Sony A1.

Canon R5 II

Canon EOS R5 Mark II (2024) is Canon’s high-resolution full-frame option. It uses a 45 MP stacked sensor (while the original R5 had a slower 45 MP non-stacked sensor). It uses Canon’s newest AF System ‘Dual Pixel Intelligent AF’ which is widely regarded as one of the strongest systems in the industry. It can shoot at 12 fps with the mechanical shutter for 10-20 seconds and at 30 fps with the electronic shutter for about 3 seconds. It also offers half of a second of Pre-Capture (15 RAW photos). It can record 8K 60 fps in 12-bit RAW and oversampled 4K at 30 fps, but overheating can be an issue so users need record shorter clips or use Canon’s battery grip with a built-in cooling fan.

Canon R5 Mark II is currently about $2000 cheaper than the Sony A1.

Final Verdict

Sony A1 is an extremely capable camera and one of the most popular flagship mirrorless models on the market. It delivers flagship-level performance in both high-speed shooting and autofocus tracking, with an autofocus system that is widely considered one of the best in the industry.

On the other hand, the A1 falls somewhat behind in the video department compared to high-resolution flagship models from other brands, such as the Nikon Z8 and Canon EOS R5 Mark II. The A1’s main advantage over those models for video work is its support for 16-bit external RAW recording. It’s also worth noting that both alternatives are significantly cheaper. While they may not match every specification of the A1, they could still represent better overall value for many users.

The newer Sony A1 II improves on the original model with a redesigned body, the addition of features such as pre-capture and Sony’s latest AI-powered processing unit for improved subject recognition and tracking.
