Sony A7R VI Review

Sony A7R VI is Sony’s latest high-resolution full-frame camera and a major upgrade over previous models in the A7R series. It replaces the A7R V by introducing a new 67 MP fully stacked sensor with faster readout speeds paired with Sony’s latest BIONZ XR2 processor with a built-in AI processing unit.

These upgrades dramatically improve performance compared to previous A7R models. The camera can shoot continuously at up to 10 fps in 14-bit RAW and even up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter, while also offering enhanced video capabilities. The autofocus system has been upgraded as well, bringing Sony’s latest AI-powered subject detection and tracking features to the high-resolution A7R lineup.

SONY E-Mount

Sony introduced the E-mount in 2010 alongside their first mirrorless cameras, giving them a huge head start. Over a decade later, there are over 100 native lenses and more than 200 if you include third-party options. Because the mount hasn’t changed, old lenses still work with newer cameras, creating a huge second-hand market. Compare that to Canon and Nikon, which only introduced new mounts in 2018, Sony users have had years to build and upgrade their kits without starting from scratch. For beginners entering the Sony system that means more options and much better prices.

General

Sony A7R VI introduces a new 66.8 MP fully stacked BSI full-frame sensor, making it the highest-resolution fully stacked full-frame sensor currently available. It is also the first camera in the A7R series to use a stacked sensor, as all previous models relied on conventional BSI sensors with significantly slower readout speeds. According to Sony, sensor readout is up to 5.6× faster than on the A7R V.

The A7R VI is also powered by Sony’s new BIONZ XR2 processor, which includes a dedicated AI processing unit to help with AI-driven tasks such as subject recognition and tracking.

In-body 5-axis image stabilization is rated for up to 8.5 stops of compensation in the center of the frame and up to 7.0 stops at the periphery.

The body design remains largely unchanged from the A7R V. New additions include a front tally lamp and a dedicated Bulb button on the top plate. The A7R VI is also the first Sony camera to feature backlit buttons. Pressing the Bulb button activates the illumination system and users can choose from three brightness levels in the menu.

Like its predecessor, the A7R VI features Sony’s hybrid screen design, combining both tilting and fully articulating movements. Connectivity remains excellent, with a full-size HDMI port, a USB-C port, 3.5 mm microphone and headphone jacks and a flash sync terminal.

A second USB-C port has been added, allowing users to transfer files through the faster USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) port while simultaneously charging the camera through the secondary USB 2.0 port.

Storage options are unchanged from the A7R V. The camera features dual card slots, each compatible with either CFexpress Type A or UHS-II SD cards.

The A7R VI also introduces a new battery system. The new batteries offer approximately 17% greater capacity than previous Sony batteries, while Sony’s updated dual-battery charger reduces charging times by up to 45%. 

The A7R VI is not compatible with older Sony batteries and new battery is not compatible with older Sony cameras or battery grips, meaning existing accessories cannot be reused.

Autofocus

Sony’s autofocus systems are widely considered among the best available today. The A7R V already delivered excellent autofocus performance, but the A7R VI further improves upon it with Sony’s latest ‘Fast Hybrid AF’ system and an upgraded AI processing engine for more accurate subject detection and tracking.

The system is shared with the new A7 V and Sony’s flagship A1 II, making the A7R VI one of Sony’s most capable cameras when it comes to autofocus performance.

AF area covers roughly 94% of the image area for both stills and movies with 759 phase-detection AF points.

The camera can recognize and track 6 different subject types: humans, animals, birds, insects, cars/trains and airplanes. You can manually select the type of subject you want to photograph or leave the camera in Auto Mode since it’s also very capable of detecting different kinds of subjects without your help.

Eye-Detection is available for humans, birds and certain animals and AI is used to detect and track the eyes and face of the subject with extremely high precision. The camera also maintains focus well in low-light conditions and even when the face is upside down. You can even manually select the preferred right or left eye, switch focus points using the joystick or allow the camera to choose automatically.

Photography

Image quality is excellent, as expected from any modern high-end camera. Dynamic range has been improved over the A7R V, allowing for greater shadow recovery, slightly lower noise levels and more detail in high-contrast scenes. Low-light performance is also impressive thanks to the backside-illuminated (BSI) sensor, particularly considering the camera’s high resolution and relatively small individual pixel size. As with any high-resolution camera, increasing the ISO will result in a noticeable loss of fine detail.

One drawback of the 67 MP sensor is the sheer size of the image files. 14-bit RAW files can exceed 100 MB each, while JPEG files may approach 50 MB depending on the scene and compression settings. Like many modern cameras, the A7R VI no longer offers an uncompressed RAW option, relying instead only on high-quality lossless compression.

Sony A7R VI is the first camera in the A7R series that can shoot at up to 10 fps in 14-bit RAW. All older models in the series offered 14-bit RAW only at up to around 6 fps and reduced the quality to 12-bit compressed RAW when shooting at 10 fps.

The new stacked sensor allows the A7R VI to shoot at up to 30 fps in 14-bit RAW using the electronic shutter without viewfinder blackout. Rolling shutter distortion is much better controlled than on the A7R V thanks to the faster sensor readout, but it remains very visible when photographing fast-moving subjects like sports or any type of fast action.

At first glance, the A7R VI might seem like a replacement for the flagship A1 or A1 II. After all, both cameras feature high-resolution stacked sensors and can shoot at up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter. However, when it comes to shooting with the electronic shutter, the A7R VI remains primarily a high-resolution camera for stills, while the flagship A1 is designed for speed. With a sensor readout time of roughly 4 ms compared to approximately 18 ms on the A7R VI, the A1 exhibits virtually no rolling shutter distortion and remains the better choice for professional sports and action photography.

According to Sony’s official specifications, the A7R VI can capture up to 65 losslessly compressed RAW images at 30 fps before the buffer fills. If you use slower SD cards rather than CFexpress cards, expect reduced buffer performance and longer buffer clearing times.

The A7R Vi also includes a sensor-shift mechanism that enables pixel-shift shooting, combining 4 or 16 exposures with slight sensor movements to produce high-resolution images with up to 266 MP.

There is also the new NR (Noise Reduction) shooting mode that captures between 4 and 32 RAW images to create a full-resolution image with less noise. Keep in mind that these files are not processed in-camera, so you will need to create the final image later using dedicated software.

Pre-Capture mode allows the camera to record images for up to one second before the shutter is fully pressed. This feature works at up to 30 and of course only with the electronic shutter. Keep in mind that this setting can negatively impact the buffer.

Video

Sony A7R V can record in 8K at 30 fps with a 1.22x crop. The footage is very detailed with great dynamic range and rolling shutter distortion is much less of an issue than on the older A7R V thanks to the stacked sensor with faster readout speed.

4K recording is now available at up to 60 fps without a crop and up to 120 fps with a slight 1.1x crop. According to some reviewers, 4K footage is oversampled from 5K.

You will need to turn on a new setting called ‘4K angle of view Priority’ to use the full-width of the sensor for 4K 120 fps recording, but this automatically reduces noise reduction used at high-ISO values.

Higher-quality oversampled 4K recording is available in Super 35/APS-C mode (with a 1.5x crop) at up to 60 fps. The footage is oversampled from approximately 6.3K delivering excellent detail, strong dynamic range, natural colors and less rolling shutter distortion.

Full HD (1080p) recording is available at up to 120 fps.

Internal recording is limited to 10-bit and there is also an option for 16-bit RAW external recording to selected devices. You can record in Sony’s ‘S-Log 3’ and S-Cinetone for greater flexibility in grading and post-processing.

The A7R VI now allows you to capture 32-bit float audio, but you do need to attach Sony’s XLR attachment handle.

The camera features built-in image stabilization (IBIS) to help with handheld recording, rated up to 8.5 stops in the center of the frame. Active Mode provides much more stable footage than Standard, but it comes with an additional 1.1x crop and therefore reduced image quality since it uses digital stabilization on top of mechanical IBIS.

The camera also features a new AI-based autoframing feature that uses eye detection, face detection or subject detection to track a person in front of the camera. This makes it look like the camera is moving by utilizing a 1.5x crop.

Individual clips are limited to 13 hours for most modes. The battery allows for 2-3 hours of video recording and USB-C power delivery can be used to extend this time.

Streaming via USB-C is available in 720p at up to 60 fps, in 1080p at 30 or 60 fps, 2.5K at up to 30 fps and in 4K at up to 30 fps. 

Overheating likely won’t be an issue when recording in 4K and the camera usually runs out of battery before overheating. According to Sony, you can record in 8K for about 2 hours before thermal shutdown, but in practice this depends on settings and the environment. It’s still advisable to keep the screen flipped out and definitely keep the camera out of direct sunlight.

Sony A7R VI Alternatives

SONY A7R V

Older A7R series cameras used lower-resolution sensors. The A7R V and A7R IV used a 61 MP sensor, while the A7R III and A7R II used a 42 MP sensor.

SONY A7R V (2022) uses a 61 MP BSI sensor. It has the same EVF and LCD panels as the A7R VI and the same dual card slot setup. It has an older version of Sony’s ‘Fast Hybrid AF’ system, but it’s still extremely capable. It can record in 8K at 25 fps and in 4K at up to 60 fps, but both modes apply a 1.25x crop. Oversampled 4K recording is available by utilizing a 1.5x crop.

Compared to the newer A7R VI, rolling shutter distortion is significantly more noticeable due to the slower sensor readout speed. The A7R V can shoot at up to around 7 fps in 14-bit RAW, while its maximum burst rate of 10 fps is only available when using 12-bit compressed RAW.

Nikon Z7 II

Nikon Z8

Nikon Z7 II (2020) is Nikon’s high-resolution full-frame option. It offers a 45 MP BSI sensor with great dynamic range and low-light performance. It features dual card slots (one SD and one CFexpress Type B), continuous shooting at up to 10 fps, 4K 60 fps recording and oversampled 4K 30 fps recording with a 1.5x crop. Video recording is limited to 8-bit with an option for external 12-bit recording.

Nikon Z7 II is less than half the price of the Sony A7R VI. It has absolutely no competition at that price.

Nikon Z8 (2023) sits much higher in Nikon’s lineup and is effectively the flagship Z9 in a smaller body. It uses a 45 MP stacked sensor paired with the EXPEED 7 processor, delivering class-leading autofocus performance with advanced subject detection, blackout-free 20 fps shooting and extremely fast sensor readout, effectively eliminating the need for a mechanical shutter. It can record 8K 60 fps in 12-bit N-RAW, 4K up to 120 fps and oversampled 4K 60 fps. It can shoot at up to 20 fps in RAW, 30 fps in full-resolution JPEG and up to 120 fps in 11 MP JPEG. Buffer performance is extremely strong and the Z8 can shoot at 20 fps for approximately 1,000 frames (50 seconds) without viewfinder blackout.

Nikon Z8 is roughly $1000 less expensive than the new Sony A7R VI, while clearly offering more features in most areas. The main advantage of the A7R VI over the R5 Mark II is its higher-resolution sensor.

Canon R5

Canon R5 II

Canon EOS R5 (2020) was Canon’s original high-resolution option and for a while it was the closest alternative to the Sony A7R III, A7R IV and A7R V. It used a 45 MP sensor and offered continuous shooting at up to 12 fps (20 fps with the electronic shutter), dual card slots (one SD and one CFexpress Type B), oversampled 4K 30 fps recording and even 8K recording, but the camera overheated very quickly and it took forever to cool down.

The price of the R5 is very similar to the older Sony A7R IV. Canon R5 is also no longer in production, but it will still be offered as a new product for a while. The R5 has been replaced by the R5 Mark II.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II (2024) upgrades to a new 45 MP fully stacked sensor and adds a DIGIC Accelerator for faster processing and industry-leading autofocus performance. Just like the original R5, it captures highly detailed photos with excellent dynamic range, pleasing colors and good low-light performance, but with less rolling shutter distortion thanks to faster readout speeds. The R5 Mark II can shoot at up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter (12 fps mechanical) and it can record 8K 12-bit RAW video at up to 60 fps. There is no recording limit and heat management has been improved.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II is approximately $500 less expensive than the Sony A7R VI while clearly offering more features in most areas. The main advantage of the A7R VI over the R5 Mark II is its higher-resolution sensor.

SONY A7R VI Price

Final Verdict

Sony A7R VI is unquestionably the most capable camera in the A7R series to date. In addition to the expected upgrades such as higher resolution, improved autofocus and expanded video capabilities, it introduces a fully stacked sensor that significantly boosts overall performance. It is the first A7R model capable of shooting at 10 fps in 14-bit RAW, whereas previous generations were limited to 6-7 fps in 14-bit RAW and dropped down to 12-bit compressed RAW to achieve their maximum 10 fps burst rate.

The A7R V still remains an excellent high-resolution camera. It’s available at a lower price and is likely to become even more affordable following the release of the A7R VI, making it an attractive option for photographers who do not need the newer model’s stacked sensor and performance advantages.

That said, 61 or 67 MP will be more resolution than many photographers need. If maximum detail is not a priority, there are several more affordable 45 MP alternatives on the market. Some of these cameras even feature stacked sensors, offering flagship-level autofocus, high-speed shooting and video performance, all at a lower price point than the new Sony A7R VI.
