In May 2022, Canon released its first mirrorless APS-C cameras for the new EOS R system: the EOS R7 and EOS R10. The R10 was designed as a versatile entry-level APS-C model featuring a 24 MP sensor, while the R7 targeted photographers who required higher resolution and more advanced features.
Since then, Canon has expanded its APS-C EOS R lineup with several more affordable models, but the R7 remains the most capable and of course the most expensive.
Canon EOS R System
The release of the Canon EOS R in 2018 introduced the Canon RF-mount. With a larger mount diameter, shorter flange distance and a 12‑pin electronic interface, it allowed Canon to design faster, sharper lenses with better low-light performance. Compared to older DSLRs the system is smaller and lighter while also improving autofocus speed and overall image quality. After nearly a decade, the EOS R System now provides a wide selection of lenses. Canon EF-mount lenses (older DSLR lenses) remain fully compatible with Canon R System cameras via the EF-EOS R adapter.

General
Canon EOS R7 features a new 32.5 MP APS-C sensor paired with Canon’s DIGIC X processor. Canon’s APS-C sensors are slightly smaller, effectively providing a 1.6x crop factor compared to the 1.5x crop found in many other camera brands.
The large body ensures excellent ergonomics, though the R7 is noticeably larger than most APS-C competitors from other brands.
The R7 is Canon’s only APS-C camera with in-body image stabilization (IBIS). With certain lenses, it provides up to approximately 8 stops of shake reduction, benefiting both handheld photography and video. Unfortunately, some of Canon’s signature “wobble” can still be visible in the corners, especially when recording video while walking or when using high frame rate modes.
The EOS R7 automatically closes the shutter when the camera is turned off, protecting the sensor from dust and debris – a helpful feature usually reserved for modern full-frame models.
The AF joystick and exposure dial are combined into a single hybrid control. Some users may not appreciate this design, as it can be difficult to adjust one setting without accidentally changing the other.
This is Canon’s only APS-C camera with dual SD card slots, allowing photos or videos to be saved to both cards simultaneously for backup.
The R7 has a fully articulating LCD screen. The EVF offers selectable refresh rates of 120 fps or 60 fps (power-saving mode).
The R7 is Canon’s only camera that uses the larger LP-E6NH batteries, found in cameras such as the EOS R5 and EOS R6. Purchasing an additional battery is still recommended, especially if you frequently use the higher EVF refresh rate.
Autofocus
Canon’s autofocus is generally considered one of the strongest systems in the industry. Canon EOS R7 uses Canon’s ‘Dual Pixel CMOS AF II’ system.
Eye-detection AF is available for both humans and animals and it performs well even when the subject is moving, though performance can decrease when there are distractions in the foreground. Subject tracking is available for humans, animals (dogs, cats and birds) and vehicles (racing cars and motorcycles).
When the camera recognizes multiple subjects, you can use the AF joystick to switch AF tracking between them.
Autofocus performs very well for photography. However, in video mode the camera may occasionally shift focus to the background or foreground instead of the intended subject. Adjusting autofocus settings is often necessary to achieve more consistent results across different situations.
Overall autofocus performance on the Canon EOS R7 is excellent, though (as expected) it does not quite match the speed, consistency or subject-recognition performance of Canon’s full-frame cameras.
Photography
Image quality is excellent, with solid dynamic range and Canon’s natural color rendering. The level of detail is impressive thanks to the high-megapixel sensor. Low-light performance remains acceptable for an APS-C sensor with a small individual pixel size.
Shutter options include mechanical, electronic front-curtain (EFCS), and fully electronic (silent) modes.
With the mechanical shutter, the R7 can shoot at up to 15 fps in 14-bit RAW with full autofocus. The buffer is much larger compared to Canon’s entry-level APS-C cameras. Officially, the R7 allows up to 51 shots before the shooting speed slows down, but this can vary based on your settings and what SD card you use.
Switching to the electronic shutter increases the burst rate to 30 fps. However, in this mode the buffer fills in about two seconds (around 40-60 shots). Photos taken with the electronic shutter have more noise in the shadows and offer less dynamic range compared to images taken with the mechanical shutter. Using the electronic shutter also results in severe rolling shutter distortion when photographing fast-moving subjects.
Several reviewers and initially repeated launch-event claims suggesting that the R7 might retain 14-bit RAW at lower frame rates such as 20 fps. However, Canon does not clearly document this behavior in the official R7 specification sheet. It’s reasonable to believe that the R7 reduces RAW capture to 12-bit A/D conversion when using the electronic shutter, consistent with most Canon EOS R-series cameras without stacked sensors.

Video
Canon EOS R7 can record oversampled 4K video at up to 30 fps using the full width of the sensor. Footage is oversampled from 7K and very detailed considering the APS-C sensor size, though rolling shutter can be an issue.
4K 60 fps recording is also available without a crop, but this mode is not oversampled, resulting in noticeably less detailed footage.
Full HD (1080p) recording is available at up to 120 fps.
The R7 supports 10-bit video recording and for a while it was Canon’s only APS-C camera with Canon’s ‘C-Log 3‘ recording option, that provides more dynamic range.
The camera has a maximum clip length of six hours for most recording modes and 90 minutes for high-frame-rate modes (100 fps and 120 fps). According to official figures, the R7 can record around one hour of oversampled 4K before overheating becomes a concern, although real-world recording times can often be longer. Battery life reportedly allows for more than two hours of 4K recording.
Overall, the R7 and the more affordable R50 V are the only Canon APS-C cameras with solid video capabilities and either could easily be used as a dedicated videography camera for YouTube or social media content.
Canon EOS R7 Alternatives
Canon EOS R10 (2022) is a mid-range APS-C mirrorless model in Canon’s EOS R Series. It has a 24 MP sensor. It offers continuous shooting at up to 15 fps with the mechanical shutter and 23 fps with the electronic shutter. It can record 4K video at 60 fps with a 1.6x crop and oversampled 4K video at up to 30 fps without a crop, but video recording is limited to 8-bit. It has no IBIS and no weather-sealing.
Sony a6700 (2023) is Sony’s most advanced APS-C model featuring a 26 MP BSI sensor paired with Sony’s BIONZ XR processor and Sony’s AI processing unit. It uses a very advanced autofocus system with an AI-based deep-learning engine for enhanced subject recognition and tracking. It offers continuous shooting at up to 11 fps, it can record 4K video at 120 fps and oversampled 4K video at up to 60 fps in 10-bit. It has IBIS and a weather sealed body.

Final Verdict
Canon EOS R7 is Canon’s most advanced APS-C camera. It is the most expensive model in the lineup and the only one to offer more than 24 MP of resolution. Combined with Canon’s excellent Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, the R7 delivers impressive performance, including oversampled 4K video recording and continuous shooting speeds of up to 30 fps.
That said, the R7 occupies an interesting position in Canon’s lineup. At a similar price point, buyers can also consider the full-frame Canon EOS R8. Essentially a more compact and affordable version of the EOS R6 Mark II, the R8 offers excellent image quality, extremely strong autofocus performance and advanced video capabilities, making it one of the most attractive entry points into Canon’s full-frame mirrorless system.
